They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and that fits well as to what everyone felt on Saturday, April 21st. Families from The Holy Trinity Cathedral Church School of Pittsburgh and the St Nicholas Church School of Monroeville joined forces to participate in the Best Buddies Friendship Walk of Pittsburgh. With the city skyline as a backdrop, on one of the first sunny Saturdays in months, and with everyone still feeling the warmth from our Pascha celebration, fifty-six adults and children gathered on several different teams for a cause significant to many of us ... supporting a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A common theme coming from church school parents has been the desire to get involved in local and regional community service. In our first try, we raised over $1000, a number we are proud of. We are also proud that former Church School graduate Dustin Defebo was the overall event chairperson (and he called upon many local Serbs to help on his committee!). In addition, three of our Church School graduates participated in the Best Buddies Walk as University of Pittsburgh students!
We hope this is the start of many events and programs in which we can share Serbian Orthodox goodwill and teach our children to put the values we learn in our faith to work through community service. (Okay, so it wasn’t a thousand words, but you weren't counting, were you???)
